Part The Whole: Exploring Connection Through Art
A single mark can change a painting. A line can connect two areas. An empty space can give everything around it room to breathe.
These relationships interest me because they suggest something beyond the composition itself: the ways we exist in relation to one another and to the world around us.
My animal series, Part of the Whole, explores this idea. Humans, animals, and plants have individual identities, yet each belongs to a larger, interconnected world.
The individual within the composition
A bird may appear as a distinct presence within a work, but its surroundings shape how we see it. Color, texture, images, and lines establish relationships within the piece.
I’m interested in that balance between individuality and belonging. How can something remain itself while also contributing to a larger whole?
Art gives me a place to explore the question without needing to resolve it completely.
A thread of connection
Red string appears in this series as a recurring element. It carries associations with protection and connection in Kabbalah and other traditions, while also functioning visually as a line that draws the eye through the work.
Alongside layered materials and imagery, it invites consideration of the ties between separate elements.
Those ties can be visible or suggested. They may feel delicate, persistent, or incomplete—much like the relationships we experience in our own lives.
What the viewer brings
Connection also happens between the artwork and the person looking at it. You may respond to an image, recognize an association, or notice a detail that leads you somewhere I hadn’t anticipated.
I welcome that openness. A work can begin with my ideas and continue through someone else’s experience.
Part of the Whole is an invitation to consider both our individuality and our place within a shared world.
